Hush Hush, Sweet Charlotte
Patti Page
1965

(Chorus)
Hush hush, sweet Charlotte
Charlotte, don't you cry
Hush hush, sweet Charlotte
He'll love you till he dies
Oh, hold him darling
Please hold him tight
And brush the tear from your eye
You weep because you had a dream last night
You dreamed that he said goodbye
He held two roses within his hand
Two roses he gave to you
The red rose tells you of his passion
The white rose his love so true
(Chorus)
And every night after he shall die
Yes every night when he's gone
The wind will sing you this lullaby
Sweet Charlotte was loved by John
(Chorus)

Bette Davis is accused of a grisly murder (in a shockingly graphic scene for the time), and while her guilt is never proven, she is shunned by the locals and taunted by kids. She grows into a wealthy old eccentric spinster many years later, and that's when the real story begins. An aging Davis turns in a great performance in this mysterious, powerful tale....

She's haunted by an Electra complex and memories of a murdered beau she may have chopped up. Her nocturnal ramblings are interrupted, then encouraged, by the arrival of her prissbitch cousin from Virginia, de Havilland, finally getting a chance to give Davis hell and act out the dark side of Melanie Wilkes. Joseph Cotten is the corrupt ole boy family doctor, Agnes Moorehead the Broomhilda housekeeper and the great Mary Astor (as a favor to Davis) in a swansong cameo.  All in all, an entertaining time is had by all.

Pretty creepy movie for its day....
Patti Page sang the haunting theme song which made it up to #8 on the top one hundred chart in 1965....
